Overview
María Ceballos Paz, a 16-year-old Colombian girl, has been living in displacement with her family for the past nine years. Decades of fighting between the government, right-wing paramilitary groups and leftist guerillas have left Colombia with the second-highest internally displaced population in the world, following the Sudan.
María was born in Nariño, a rural area in southern Colombia. She and her family left due to the violence when she was about seven years old. Her mother told her they were going on vacation, and once they arrived in Cali, her mother told her that her father had been killed by guerillas and that they were not going back.
Susan Hoenig, mentors María. Among Hollywood's top documentary film and television producers, Hoenig's shows have included Kitchen Nightmares for FOX, For Love or Money for NBC, Discovery Channel's World Championship Adventure Race and Rat for National Geographic.
